Lee, the Hollywood sign signifies Hollywood as the global capital of the worldwide entertainment industry. Built in 1923 as a real estate advertisement, it was not expected to last more than a year. By the 1930's it became a West Coast phenomenon and a tourist attraction as well as a symbol for the glamour that is Hollywood. In 1973, the 50-year-old Sign was declared a Historical Landmark by the City?s Cultural Heritage Board. In August of 1978, after a spectacular fund raising effort, the former sign was torn down and replaced with a new one on a massive new steel frame. The Hollywood Sign Trust was established to maintain and protect it. The current Sign is four stories high, 450-feet long and weighs 480,000 lbs. There are numerous places for a good view of the sign, among them are the corners of Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue; Franklin Avenue and Gower; the corner of Beachwood Canyon Drive and Glen Holly; and the dog park, near the Hollywood Reservoir (off of Canyon Lake).
