Getty Center's hilltop in the Santa Monica Mountains offers a spectacular view of the Los Angeles region landscape--the Pacific Ocean, the San Gabriel Mountains, and the vast street-grid of the city.

The  J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center is designed around an open central courtyard surrounded by five two-story pavilions. These pavilions house both changing exhibitions and the permanent collections of pre-20th-century European paintings, drawings, illuminated manuscripts, sculpture, and decorative arts, and 19th- and 20th-century American and European photographs. Visitors are free to view works of art chronologically or in random sequence by moving between pavilions.

The Research Institute at the Center offers changing exhibitions of rare books, photographs, and other materials from its collections in the Exhibition Gallery, located just off the lobby of the Research Institute building.
